Welcome to Lowering Poverty and Disease in Southern Nicaragua (LPD.com). If you found your way here you are either a family member or friend who has helped out on one of our missions or service trips or was pointed here by someone who has.
Our mission is to identify areas of need in Nicaragua and then present opportunities for volunteers living in the States and Canada to help out. While we are focused on public health projects, we have also supported orphanages and helped provide tuition support for Nicaraguan students. Click on the tabs above for an introduction to our ongoing and past projects.
We are entirely supported by donations and volunteerism and are not aligned with any religious or political organizations. We have an account with the Newton-San Juan Del Sur Sister City Project, a registered non-profit also active in Nicaragua, so that donations can be made tax-deductible.
We will be returning to Nicaragua this summer to perform our second major public health project. The objective is to perform a prevalence study of chronic kidney disease in Rivas Department. Volunteer research assistants will include undergraduates, as well as nursing, public heath and medical students. We are actively soliciting for volunteers and support for this project.

Jesus Ignacio Flores died on Jan 19 of chronic kidney disease. The cause of this meso-american epidemic is unknown but agriworkers seem to be particularly vulnerable.
