The Assessment of Biosand Filters was a two year project of LPD led by Lynne Fiore and completed with the assistance of a dozen volunteers.  The project was designed to test whether several hundred Point-of-use biosand filters placed in homes by the Newton Sister City Project were performing up to specifications.  The project began with a pilot study done in 2007 to determine the feasibility of collection of water specimens from the field and establishment of a microbiology lab in San Juan del Sur.  The following year the team sampled 199 homes to determine water quality.  The results were published in the Journal of Rural and Remote Health and presented by Lynne Fiore at their annual meeting in 2010.  The link above will take you to the full article and the document library below contains relevant information.

The cost of the project was $12,000 which was raised by donors to LPD.com and students at the Newton Country Day School.  Lynne also received a $5,000 fellowship grant from the University of Michigan to support the project.
