Renal Failure Project

There has been a long held perception that renal failure is common among young people in Nicaragua but there is a paucity of data to support this contention.  Over the past few years the subject has received increasing attention.  A possible association between sugar cane workers and renal dysfunction has led to investigations to attempt to document the prevalence and etiology of this problem.

In 2009 the Boston University School of Public Health initiated a 3 year study of the subject.  Their initial report and first phase plan are described in documents in the library below.  Because the work that BU is doing is limited tot he Northern Regions of Nicaragua, LPD has initiated companion work in Souther Nicaragua.  The document library contains an excel spread sheet of the data collected by an LPD pilot study in 2010.  We are now considering extending this work in 2012.
